"Avatar Land" Coming to Animal Kingdom

Disney announced yesterday that a new land themed after the movie Avatar will be coming to the Animal Kingdom. While details on just about everything remain unclear, construction is expected to begin in 2013. A couple of initial thoughts:

1. Expansion at Animal Kingdom is absolutely necessary. To call it a "full day" theme park right now is generous.

2. I wonder what kind of shelf life Avatar has as a brand. The project is expected to take upwards of five years to complete.

Ultimately, fans of the Disney theme parks should hope that the land contains the attention to detail and state of the art attractions to compete with Harry Potter and Universal Studios.

  1. Apparently there are two Avatar sequels coming out in 5 years. This really does nothing for me. I would have preferred a George Lucas Land, Beastly Kingdom, or something.

I actually think that it is kind of desperate that the company is grabbing hold of a franchise that is all effects and little story. It's funny to think that Universal has Potter, which is a wonderfully rich story with a lush environment, and Disney is lacking on the story front.

I kinda hope that this is one of those things that are announced, but don't happen.
