Fantasy Land Expansion Hard Opening Announced

Disney has officially announced the opening of a large portion of the Fantasy Land Expansion on December 6th 2012 (after several weeks of previews).  Other than a large meet and greet, the only major addition to be added will be the Seven Dwarfs mine coaster in 2014.  This means Dutch will be the first of the MMOM crew to experience Under the Sea-Voyage of the Little Mermaid, the Be our Guest Restaurant, Beast's Castle, and Gaston's Tavern.

Here are some initial questions I would use to determine the early success of this major undertaking.  Lets face it, while Disney may be able to "afford" to have a miss on the Fantasy Land Expansion, they clearly want to take a bite out of success of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (WWHP).  Hopefully they aimed high.

1.  Will Under the Sea-Voyage of the Little Mermaid qualify as a top 7 or top 10 attraction? Will the technology be substantially better than that which is found in the Seas w/ Nemo and Friends?

2.  How will the Be Our Guest Restaurant handle the transition from counter service to table service? Will the table service be "signature dining?"  How close will the counter service quality be to that of Sunshine Seasons in Epcot (which is regarded as one of the best counter service options in the World).

3.  Will Gaston's Tavern serve a unique drink item that you can only get there? Will there be any innovation in the menu?

4.  How immersive will Beast's Castle and the surrounding area be?  Will it "transport" guests to the Beauty and the Beast movie like WWHP does at Islands of Adventure?

Obviously, this is all a round-about way of saying.  Dutch, please answer these questions for us when you go in January.

  1. I am particularly interested to know whether Under the Sea-Voyage of the Little Mermaid is the same as it the California version. If it is, I can say that the technology is really something.

  2. I hope it is too, I have read good things about the CA version. If you read some of the popular message boards, some "verified" cast members are tempering their expectations.
